Lift Your Razor High: Opening Night

This has been the absolute hardest show I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. Mrs. Lovett is such a troubled character, and I had a lot of trouble when it came to her humanity. After all, she is the true villain in the show (at least in my eyes). I didn't feel right just playing and paying attention to her evil side. I wanted to play her humanity. Her human error. Her want for true love. After all, wouldn't we all do whatever it took to be with our one true love?

She has this tussle within herself of having motherly affection for Toby which I found particularly interesting. Even from the beginning, she says that Todd and Johanna can be a family. When Toby comes in, she sees him as her own. Eventually, she has to choose between her child and Todd, and she chooses her love who can never love her back.

Did she actually poison Lucy? Did she just grasp her opportunity? These are questions I still don't exactly have the answer for. And I think that is ok. I love her because unlike other characters, her backstory is unknown to the audience, and I believe that to be beautiful to work with.

And now for opening night. See you at closing:)
